How Does Fat Leave the Body When You Lose Weight?

When you lose weight, fat doesn't turn into muscle and it isn't passed in your stool. It's broken down into carbon dioxide and water. Research published in the BMJ found that of 10 kg of fat lost, about 8.4 kg leaves as carbon dioxide you exhale and roughly 1.6 kg leaves as water — in urine, sweat, tears and breath.

So — do you poop out fat?

Almost never, and this is the part that surprises people most.

Small amounts of dietary fat can pass through in stool if your body doesn't absorb it — that's a normal digestive process, and it's also why certain medications that block fat absorption have the side effects they do. But the fat already stored on your body doesn't leave that way.

Stored fat has to be broken apart chemically before it can go anywhere. That happens inside your cells, not in your intestines.

Where it actually goes

Body fat is stored as triglycerides — molecules built from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. To use that fat for energy, your body has to break those molecules apart and combine them with oxygen. What's left over is carbon dioxide and water.

The carbon dioxide travels through your bloodstream to your lungs and you breathe it out. The water leaves through every route your body normally uses for fluid.

Put simply: you exhale most of your weight loss.

The researchers behind the BMJ paper calculated that metabolising 10 kg of fat takes about 29 kg of inhaled oxygen, and produces roughly 28 kg of carbon dioxide and 11 kg of water.

Does that mean breathing more makes you lose weight?

No — and this is worth saying clearly, because it's a common misreading of the study.

Breathing faster doesn't burn fat. Your breathing rate follows your body's energy demand, not the other way around. Hyperventilating just makes you lightheaded. What actually drives the process is your body needing to draw on stored energy in the first place — which comes down to what and how you eat, how you move, how you sleep, and how your metabolism is functioning.

Most of us picture fat "melting" or being flushed out somehow. Neither is right, and the mental picture matters more than it sounds.
